“This is a terrible tragedy for the Mohini family, and we want to ensure that the burden they bear can be reduced as much as possible into the future. (Click here for details for donations to this Trust Fund)
“As a company we also want to express our gratitude to those residents of View Road, who rendered immediate assistance to Mr Mohini, and their efforts to sustain his life, as well as others that have helped the Police with their enquiries and investigation.”
The funeral for Mr Mohini will be held on at Waikumete Cemetery (also known as Waitamata Cemetery), Great North Rd, Kelston, Chapel 1, Thursday at 1pm. Respect and tributes can be paid at Davis Funeral Services, 400 Dominion Rd, between, between 9am and 3pm, tomorrow, February 3.
Company and Industry Safety
Barrie White said Auckland Co-op Taxis would continue to press the Government for a clear response to issues of driver safety.
“We will allow the Government a reasonable grace period to make a decision on the issue surrounding driver safety, however regardless of their decision we will be taking our own steps to ensure the safety of the fleet.
“Driver safety is paramount, so we have to move quickly to ensure the safety of our fleet.
We will supply and support the driver’s choice for any security measure a driver wishes to put in place for themselves. These may include screens, cameras and flak jackets or protective clothing.
“We are expecting a positive outcome from the Government in terms of its support for driver safety, but we are not expecting the Government to fund safety devices and measures. Anything the Government can do to help the drivers and enhance their safety will be encouraging.”
Effective immediately, Auckland Co-op Taxis is also introducing new procedures for night bookings, so that drivers are not required to get out of vehicles to let the customer know they are there. Instead the customer will receive a call from the Company’s call centre when the taxi arrives.

Tributes:
Hi Jill
Thank you for taking my call this morning.
The Agency is deeply saddened by the death of Mr Mohini, and this has had a particular impact on those of us who have a close relationship with the taxi industry. Andy Thackwray has asked me to pass on his condolences for both the family and Auckland Co-op, and indeed this comes from all of us here at the Agency.
Some of us have met Mr Mohini in the past, and I note that our records clearly indicate that he is one of those operators who sets very high standards for himself. This is evidenced by Mr Mohini having a clean and unblemished taxi inspection record.
Let me know if there is anything we can do to help.
I intend to be at the funeral on Thursday as a representative for the NZ Transport Agency, but more importantly as a friend to the taxi industry.
Regards,
Tere Lawson
Principal Transport Officer (Passenger)
NZ Transport Agency

Sirs
My wife Margaret and I are shocked by this tragedy. We urge your Company - and , in fact, all taxi companies - to immediately install protective screens between drivers and passengers in all taxis. Cameras may help in some cases, but it seems to us they are not sufficient. Screens are the only way to go in our opinion.

MEDIA RELEASE DECEMBER 2009
TaxiCharge NZ Ltd installs Secure Online Payment Terminals in Auckland Co-op Taxis, New Zealand’s largest Taxi Fleet.
In one of the largest upgrades of mobile on line point of sale technology, billing and reporting solutions provider TaxiCharge NZ Ltd is upgrading 800 terminals in the Auckland Co-operative taxi fleet to a fully online EFTPOS system.
The general manager of TaxiCharge Mr Mark Lines, says the on-line terminals bring improved benefits to the customer including added payment security to the transaction at the time of the trip.
The terminals accept TaxiCharge cards as well as debit and credit cards, in a move which Lines says is an ongoing investment and commitment by the company to bring online payment terminals to its 22 Partners taxi companies throughout New Zealand.
The contract follows a successful terminal installation with the Wellington Combined Taxis fleet in Wellington, the country’s second largest fleet behind Auckland Co-op.
Payments are processed through TaxiCharge which handles more than 300,000 transactions per month from a client base in excess of 33,000.
Terminal supplier SmartPay Cadmus supports Cadmus EFTPOS terminals in more than 2500 taxis in New Zealand and in excess of 3800 in Australia. Cadmus terminals have been developed in conjunction with TaxiCharge since 1996.

Media Statement
Largest taxi fleet goes online for payments
Auckland Co-op Taxis will take its card fares online from next Monday, December 14, improving customer service and convenience.
This initiative by the country’s largest taxi fleet means that all Auckland Co-op Taxis will be eftpos-capable, offering the same range of payment solutions as most retailers throughout New Zealand.
Auckland Co-op Taxis General Manager Barrie White says that taking the fleet’s payment services online will mean increased convenience for the company’s customers, as until now, as with most taxis throughout New Zealand, fare payment options have been restricted to either cash or credit card transactions.
“This is a major step forward in terms of service and convenience because many customers do not have or do not wish to use the credit card option for small charges which also attract a surcharge.
“Going online also enhances overall security. It will reduce the amount of cash that our drivers carry.”
Delivery of this new service has meant fitting the company’s entire 760-strong fleet with additional wireless technology.
Mr White says this will be the largest number of new online terminals to start operations as any one time.
Auckland Co-op Taxis card services are managed by TaxiCharge NZ, in which the company is the largest shareholder.
Like most taxi companies throughout New Zealand, the co-op’s current credit card system is managed by manually downloading card transaction data at the end of a shift.
